New Haven celebrates groundbreaking of Alexion construction project on Route 34

(6/17/2013) New Haven Register - In two years, an 11-story fully occupied medical-office complex will open in a portion of a shuttered Route 34 highway with Alexion Pharmeceuticals the major tenant.

Local, state and federal officials were at the groundbreaking Monday to celebrate the beginning of construction of the $140 million development, which was proposed seven years ago by Carter Winstanley.

Mayor John DeStefano Jr., said two decades ago the city was not as accommodating as it should have been for startups like Alexion, which began to pursue its research into treatments for orphan diseases at Science Park in New Haven in 1992.

Now a $1.49 billion success story, Alexion has come full circle by agreeing to establish its world headquarters here as the result of public and private partnerships and location’s close proximity to biomedical research at the Yale Medical School.

The state has agreed to provide $51 million in assistance if it generates 200 to 300 more full-time jobs by 2017, in addition to the 350 it will bring to the city in its move from Cheshire.

DeStefano said those investments will continue to reap results and he said more government has to step up to build rail and air travel capacity to further boost this beginning.
